Cedric Fortune, 21, of Quincy, is facing several felonies following the Thursday night, Dec. 21, chase and crash, Massachusetts State Police said.

It began after a state police trooper noticed his blue Mercedes run a red light at the intersection of Frontage Road and the Massachusetts Avenue Connector around 10:30 p.m. and tried to pull him over.

Fortune sped off and refused to stop, police said. The trooper decided to call off the chase for fear of other drivers on the road.

Though Fortune didn't seem to realize he was no longer being tailed because he crashed into a house at 754 East Broadway in South Boston soon after, authorities said.

He jumped from the smashed sedan and ran away, but a state trooper chased him down L Street and arrested him near East 3rd Street.

The passenger in the Mercedes was able to escape.

A Boston building inspector was called in to assess the damage to the home.

Fortune is charged with:

  • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  • Operating after license suspension
  • Failure to stop for police
  • Leaving the scene of a crash that caused property damage
  • Malicious destruction of property over $1,200
  • Speeding
  • Unsafe operation of a motor vehicle
  • Failure to stop/yield at a traffic signal
  • Trespassing (suspect is believed to run through private property while trying to evade troopers)
